  • "Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of letters, printed text and engravings, and memoranda. The volume includes the sale catalogue, printed in 1777, of Ives' coins, medals, and "beautiful painted glass," to be sold at auction by "Mess. Langford"; the items in the catalogue include Roman brass; Saxon coins; English coins; gold coins; seals; gold and copper medals; antiquities; and stained glass. This catalogue is followed by copies of 42 letters, dated 1773, from Ives to various recipients such as Rev. James Granger and Dr. Andrew Ducarel. Written in his hand and signed with his name, the letters primarily contain matters of routine personal correspondence as well as discussions about ancient coins and other antiquities, his engravings, and business matters related to his forthcoming book. These letters are followed by 10 pages of antiquarian notes on Blundeston rectory and 8 plates of arms of nobility titled Sigilla Antiqua Norfolciensia, "Impressit Johannes Ives" and dated 1772. The volume concludes with 58 pages of the diary of Ives' father dated 1734-5, written when the author was 16 years old. The diary begins with details of the voting at the general election of 1734 and mentions "Horatio Walpoole." The diary also records the activities of local politicians at Yarmouth; a copy of an anti-Tory song and numerous other lighthearted verses; notes concerning the building, buying, and selling of ships as well as their cargoes; descriptions of the births, marriages, and burials of his acquaintances; and notes on other personal matters including new clothes, dance lessons, and a visit to a menagerie."
