An Inland voyage

An Inland Voyage, details his canoeing trip through France and Belgium in 1876. Pioneering new ground in outdoor literature, this was Stevenson's first book. He had decided to become free from his parent's financial support so that he might freely pursue the woman he loved; to support himself he wrote travelogues, most notably An Inland Voyage, Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes and The Silverado Squatters. Stevenson undertook the journey with his friend, Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, at a time when such outdoor travel for leisure was considered unusual and it resulted in this romantic and original work that still inspires travelers today.

  • "An Inland Voyage (1878) is a travelogue by Robert Louis Stevenson about a canoeing trip through France and Belgium in 1876. It is Stevenson's earliest book and a pioneering work of outdoor literature. As a young man, Stevenson desired to be financially independent so that he might pursue the woman he loved, and set about funding his freedom from parental support by writing travelogues, the three most prominent being An Inland Voyage, Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879) and The Silverado Squatters (1883) ..."@en
  • "Based on Stevenson's travels with a stubborn donkey named Modestine through south central France, this entertaining narrative is one of the best travelogues of the nineteenth-century. Stevenson offers many keen observations about France, the people, and the dramatic history of the region, as well as thoughtful insights about the religious strife between the Catholics and Protestants."

  • "One of the first books to mention a sleeping bag and to regard camping and hiking as recreational activities, Stevenson's Travels With a Donkey in the Cevennes tells the story of the author's 120-mile hike alone in the Cevennes mountains."@en

  • "An inland voyage is Robert Louis Stevenson's account of a trip that he once made in the area between Belgium and Northern France when he was 26 years old. Being accompanied by his friend and countryman Walter Grindlay Simpson, Stevenson travelled down the Oise River to finally reach close to the Seine River in France. Taking the names of Arethusa and Cigarette, the two friends mostly used canoes as their main means of transportation as long as they were not obliged to travel by rail. The book is divided into more than twenty chapters that minutely delineate the friends' itinerary. Despite the spread of factories and heavy industries in the area, the book paints the simplicity and spontaneity of 19th-century European life. Indeed, the book speaks about the boys' encounter with welcoming and amiable locals who are often very pleased to receive visitors from other parts of the world. Since the narrative gives a refreshing description of the region, its geographical characteristics and its different places of interest, namely its old castles and attractive landscapes, it has become a guidebook for travelers who wish to visit the area and relive the itinerary made by Stevenson and his companion."
  • "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879) is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's earliest published works and is considered a pioneering classic of outdoor literature. Stevenson was in his late 20s and still dependent on his parents for support. Travels was both meant to raise money he needed to be with the woman he loved, and provide adventure Stevenson craved, being sickly much of his life. Travels recounts Stevenson's 12-day, 120-mile solo hiking journey through the sparsely populated and impoverished areas of the Cévennes mountains in south-central France ..."@en
  • "Robert Louis Stevenson was not only a gifted writer; he was also an indefatigable traveller. His thirst for adventure was formed by his boyhood visits to remote Scottish lighthouses, and he spent much of his life fleeing the rigours of cold climes and social orthodoxy. Along the way he travelled through the Cevennes with a donkey, booked passage to and across America, and finally famously settled in Samoa in the South Pacific. The canoeing trip through Belgium and northern France that Stevenson describes in An Inland Voyage was taken in 1876, when the author was 26 years old. Stevenson and his companion, Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, each had a kayakA"-style wooden canoe, with a deck and rigged with a sail. Starting in Belgium and then travelling downriver in France from Maubeuge (near Mons) to Pontoise on the outskirts of Paris, the book paints a charming picture of Western Europe at a more innocent time."
