Goodman's performance in the 1999 stage version won the Olivier Award for Best Actor, London's equivalent to Broadway's Tony Award. Trevor Nunn, director of the National Theatre, won the best-director Olivier for his daring update of the play to early 1930s Venice.' http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/merchant/"

  • "Innovatively reframed in the 1930s, William Shakespeare's immortal story of love and revenge comes to life ... under the guidance of Trevor Nunn. Impoverished noble Bassanio intends to marry beautiful heiress Portia, but needs to borrow money from his friend, the wealthy Antonio. Unfortunately, Antonio's assets are tied up, forcing him to seek a loan from Shylock, who demands a pound of flesh if the sum is not repaid on time. A shocking twist of fate forces all four players into a high stakes match of wits and willpower, with Portia donning the disguise of a male lawyer in the powerhouse finale."@en
  • "Set in the dark and dangerous world of shady dealing and grasping greed where human life is gambled for material gain. Shakespeare's Shylock is both the stereotypical Jewish money-lender and a moving portrayal of the humiliation wrought by bigotry and prejudice. Counterpointing Shylock's cautious prudence is Bassanio's casual attitude to human and financial resources. Starring Bob Peck, Paul McGann and Hadyn Gwynne."
