  • "From a purely clinical view, the violence which has occurred in the former Yugoslavia does not deserve special attention compared with, for example, the genocide in Cambodi and Iraq, and world war two. Yet from the perspectives of postmdoernism and postcommunism that are central to this discussion, the butchery in former Yugoslavia is a special case because this violence is occurring in the heart of Europe which had promised never to tolerate such a bloodbath again. "Rational" solutions seem incapable of getting to grips with the problem. The author argues that the media has reduced the world to a collective voyeur that passively watches, monitors, and observes horrible crimes against humanity in former Yugoslavia. The balkan war has produced the balkanization of the West with the leading Western powers seemingly paralyzed by the spectacle of internicine warfare. Mestrovic claims that the Balkan war has de-railed the movement for unification in Europe. The Islamic world has seen that the West is quite willing to bomb Muslim targets, from Iraq to Somalia, but absolutely unwilling to wage a "just war" to save the Bosnian Muslims.; The author concludes that the Balkan war is a key catalyst in theunravelling of the West."
