"Agli inizi degli anni '80 Arthur, un giornalista inglese che lavora in un quotidiano di New York, riceve l'incarico di scrivere un articolo sulla vicenda di Brian Slade, mitica star del 'glam rock', scomparso improvvisamente dalle scene all'apice della fama. Arthur, da ragazzo, era stato tra coloro che avevano per Slade una vera passione. Con qualche emozione, Arthur cerca di ricostruire il quadro di quegli anni: comincia ad analizzare il rapporto tra Brian e la moglie Mandy, rintracciandola in un locale di secondo piano ed invitandola a ricordare la sua storia con Brian. Si torna così alla Londra degli anni Settanta, quando ormai dilaga la moda di una musica rock che deve essere sempre più sfrenata e narcisista. Slade si adatta subito a quel clima esibizionistico, indossa abiti sgargianti, pettinature dai colori vistosi, soprattutto insiste sull'ambivalenza e la sfrenatezza degli atteggiamenti sessuali. Si sposa e va in America dove incontra Curt Wild, altra star del rock, di cui diventa intimo amico, lo porta a Londra, la moglie esasperata lo maledice. Si torna agli anni Ottanta e Arthur telefona a Curt Wild che lo invita al concerto di Tommy Stone. Arthur vi si reca, e osserva: quel Tommy somiglia proprio a Brian. (Lafeltrinelli)."
