The scandal of the season

London, 1711. As the rich, young offspring of the city's most fashionable families fill their days with masquerade balls and clandestine courtships, Arabella Fermor and Robert, Lord Petre, lead the pursuit of pleasure. Beautiful and vain, Arabella is a clever coquette with a large circle of beaus. Lord Petre, seventh Baron of Ingatestone, is a man-about-town with his choice of mistresses. Drawn together by an overpowering attraction, the two begin an illicit affair. Alexander Pope, sickly and nearly penniless, is peripheral by birth, yet his uncommon wit and ambition gain him unlikely entrance into high society. Once there, privy to every nuance and drama, he is a ruthless observer. He longs for the success that will cement his place in society; all he needs is one poem grand enough to make his reputation. As the forbidden passion between Arabella and Lord Petre deepens, an intrigue of a darker nature threatens to overtake them. Fortunes change and reputations -- even lives -- are imperiled. In the aftermath, Pope discovers the idea for a daring poem that will catapult him to fame and fortune.

  • "Arabella knows that other girls have been ruined by risking an affair like the one she dares to contemplate. The object of her desire Robert Petre, is also flirting with a Jacobite plot against Queen Anne, and he knows that if his part in the conspiracy is found out he will be hanged."
  • "The young aspiring poet Alexander Pope crosses paths with the coquettish Arabella and man about town Lord Petre at a masquerade ball. It's 1711, and the fashionable citizens of London are weary of recent political and social upheaval and are intent on simply pursuing enjoyment. But society in general is not accepting of any attraction that can't restrain itself behind at least a veneer of respectability, and Arabella and Lord Petre's intense attraction is both unacceptable and dangerous. It certainly draws Pope's attention, and becomes the inspiration for The Rape of the Lock, the work that catapults him to fame and fortune. Set in a fickle world where a choice word can undo a reputation and the turn of a card can make or break a fortune, this richly imagined novel by a talented new writer is a riveting portrait of an era and an exuberant, erotic tale of intrigue, betrayal, and envy."@en

Arabella is in need of a rich husband, but knows that girls have been ruined by risking an affair. The object of her desire is also flirting with a Jacobite plot against Queen Anne, aware that if such a conspiracy were found out, he could be hanged. The couple's affair and its notorious finale is a true story, covered up in its day because it threatened to cause a sensation."
