These glamorous showgirls have everything a girl could want - except engagement rings. In a quest for love, Lorelei and her gold-digger pal Dorothy set sail on a luxury-liner bound for France. But the pair hit rocky waters when a manipulative detective, an over-aged, over-sexed millionaire and the entire men's Olympic team try to put an anchor in their mischief.

  • "Anita Loos' old story from the 1920s about a pair of single women in search of husbands, gets a makeover in Howard Hawks' 1953 musical. The remake stars Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as two friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne."

By the time the ship reaches Paris, a missing diamond tiara lands the girls in hot water, but by following their hearts, they'll get out of trouble and on to the altar."

  • "A musical comedy about two showgirls' exploitation of uniformly sexless males for different, if complimentary reasons. Lorelei's money-obsessed outlook is paralleled by Dorothy's sex obsession. Subtle similarities/differences are suggested by the use of costume, colour and the consistent symmetrical framing of the two women. This is the ironic culmination of the reversal of sex-stereotyping explicit in His Girl Friday and I Was a Male War Bride. The two women play the same sexual games with men as the two male sailor-buddies play with women in A Girl in Every Port."@en

  • "Bachelorette showgirl singers Dorothy Shaw and Lorelei Lee are sailing to Paris, courtesy of Lorelei's millionaire boyfriend Gus Esmond, Jr. They're also being shadowed--thanks to Gus Sr.--by private detective Ernie Malone. Lorelei gets embroiled in a contretemps involving Sir Francis "Piggy" Beekman, outspoken Lady Beekman, and a tiara. Dorothy, meanwhile, becomes involved in a running flirtation with the detective. All's well that ends well, but everything plays second fiddle to the snazzy costumes and in-your-face attitudes sported by the showgirls. One of Howard Hawks' biggest commercial hits, this lush, garish, cynical, yet fun-filled fortune-hunter satire is based on a 1949 Broadway musical and has a wisp of a plot, serving merely to tie together the lavish musical numbers."
