De afgelopen eeuw heeft ons vertrouwd gemaakt met de gedachte dat verlichting en barbaarsheid elkaar niet uitsluiten. Josef Früchtl pakt deze gedachte in zijn oratie opnieuw op en probeert de volgende vragen te beantwoorden: welk theoretisch principe heeft deze gedachte mogelijk gemaakt? Of op een klassieke filosofische manier geformuleerd: wat is de voorwaarde van de mogelijkheid van deze gedachte? Welke relaties van verlichting en barbaarsheid kan men uitleggen als men dit principe volgt? En direct hiermee samenhangend: van welke relatie moeten wij ons heden ten dage meer dan ooit bewust zij.
