Class formation, civil society and the state : a comparative analysis of Russia, France, the US and England

Rather than using a ranking system based on occupational prestige to explain social stratification through class, this book shows how class formation can be explained through political events and decisions. Using detailed analyses of Russia, France, the United States and England, Michael Burrage claims that class formation is shaped by the habitual relationship between the state and civil society, and that contrary to general opinion, is undermined by free markets. Using George Orwell's famous description of England as class-ridden as the foundation for his argument, Michael Burrage reveals whether this still holds true today, and provides provocative and original theory on how and why classes have emerged, or failed to emerge.
