Bonnie Prince Charlie, etc

Ronald is born into scandal. The son of an illicit marriage, he is orphaned when his father gets thrown in prison for marrying the daughter of a French noble. Smuggled out of France by his father's friend to be brought up by a church elder in Scotland, Ronald is later arrested after trying to help a Jacobite. He escapes, though, and returns to France to avenge his father's enemy.

  • "Although it is set during the reign of Bonnie Prince Charlie (King Charles III), G. A. Henty's 1888 novel is not a story of the young monarch's life. A celebrated bildungsroman, Bonnie Prince Charlie: A Tale of Fontenoy and Culloden centers around Ronald Leslie, a young Scotsman who is one of the last of his generation to serve in the French Army. Henty's critics have suggested that the entire text could be a comment on King Charles III's reign, as evidenced by the book's title."@en

  • "Ronald Leslie, son of a French heiress and Scottish officer, is rescued as a baby from his parents' enemies and taken to safety in Scotland. While still young, he searches for his parents in France, encountering many dangerous situations, then returns to Scotland with Prince Charles and is wounded in the Battle of Culloden, escapes, and continues to search for his parents."@en
