The war on crime in the District of Columbia, 1955-1975

The response of the criminal justice system to actual and perceived crime in the District of Columbia during the period 1955-1975 was investigated. Results indicated that a variety of efforts contribute to the relatively stable trend of reported crime during the last five years of the period studied, including: (1) increased numbers of police; (2) holding police commanders accountable for crime; (3) court reorganization; (4) narcotics treatment programs; and (5) increased incarceration rate for offenders. Numerous graphs, tables, and appendices are included. (Author).
