Uncle Tom's cabin : a story of slavery in America fifty years ago, pt. 1

Following three slaves and their experiences in and out of slavery, Stowe's novel deals with the effects of slavery on both blacks and whites in the antebellum, or pre-Civil War, South. Uncle Tom's Cabin can be seen in four uneven parts: Part I consisting of chapters one through nine, about the slave Eliza and her escape to freedom; Part II consisting of chapters ten through twenty-nine, about Uncle Tom and his relationship with Little Eva on the St. Clare plantation; Part III consisting of chapters thirty through forty-two, about Simon Legree and the death of Uncle Tom; and Part IV consisting of chapters forty-three through forty-five, which offer a resolution of the action and Harriet Beecher Stowe's appeal for the end of slavery. -- Answers.com.

  • "This 1852 anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe became the best-selling novel of the 19th century. The novel presents the long-suffering slave Uncle Tom as he and other characters face various hardships in the American South. Stowe's sentimental prose depicts the reality of slavery while also asserting that the power of Christianity can overcome slavery's oppression. Many historians credit Uncle Tom's Cabin with fueling the anti-slavery cause in the United States; however, the novel has a mixed legacy. Many of the 19th-century plays inspired by the novel popularized various stereotypes about African Americans, including the affectionate "mammy" and the dutiful, faithful "Uncle Tom." This particular edition contains 27 illustrations of memorable scenes from the novel."@en

  • "Published in 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin brought the abolitionists' message to the public conscience--no woman before or since has so moved America to take action against an injustice. Indeed, Abraham Lincoln greeted Stowe in 1863 as the "little lady who made this big war." Eliza Harris, a slave whose child is to be sold, escapes her beloved home on the Shelby plantation in Kentucky, and heads North, eluding the hired slave catchers. Aided by the underground railroad, Quakers, and others opposed to the Fugitive Slave Act, Eliza, her son, and her husband George run toward Canada. As the Harrises flee to freedom, another slave, Uncle Tom, is sent "down the river" for sale. Too loyal to abuse his master's trust, too Christian to rebel, Tom wrenches himself from his family. Befriending a white child, Evangeline St. Clare, Tom is purchased by her father and taken to their home in New Orleans. Although Evangeline's father finally resolves to free his slaves, his sudden death places him in the ranks of those who mean well by their slaves but never take action. Tom is sent farther downriver to Simon Legree's plantation, and the whips of Legree's overseers."@en

  • "Harriet Beecher Stowe's ground breaking story follows a number of characters through their vastly different journeys and disparate points of view. Whether on the road to freedom travelling the Underground Railroad, or remaining in captivity, Stowe's narrative exposed the bleak and harrowing nature of slavery to her contemporary society. The story's central character Uncle Tom, whose affectionate owners are forced to sell him when they fall on hard times, finds himself being treated appallingly by his new slave-master, which tests his resolve and challenges his faith. Uncle Tom's Cabin is credited with helping to fuel the abolitionist cause in the decades before the American Civil War and it shaped many of the other slave narratives of the era, such as Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Ann Jacobs. Uncle Tom's Cabin became one of the best-selling novels of the 19th century, and helped to establish the genre of sentimental fiction. It is estimated that over three million people have attended a stage play or musical adaptation of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the story has also been adapted for the screen, most recently into a television movie starring Samuel L. Jackson in 1987. HarperPerennial Classics brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. • "Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, on June 14th 1811. Over the course of her Life Harriet wrote more than twenty books including travel memoirs and collections of letters and articles. Her stand out work is undoubtedly 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' about the life of African Americans under slavery. It reached millions as both a book and a play and was influential in setting both the tone and the agenda for anti-slavery forces in the North and for unyielding anger in the South. When she was invited to the White House by Lincoln he is rumoured to have said "so you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." In the 1870s, Stowe's brother, Henry Ward, also an abolitionist, was accused of adultery and a national scandal ensured. Harriet fled to Florida unable to bear the attacks on her brother, who she believed innocent. Harriet was among the founders of the Hartford Art School, which later became part of the University of Hartford. She was also influential in the call for women to have a better standing in society and considered the cause as just as necessary as the abolition of slavery. With the death of her husband Calvin Stowe in 1886, after a half century together, Harriet's own health started to decline rapidly. By 1888 it was reported in The Washington Post that due to dementia she had started "writing Uncle Tom's Cabin over again. She imagined that she was engaged in the original composition, and for several hours every day she industriously inscribed long passages of the book, almost word for word, unconsciously from memory, the authoress imagining that she composed the matter as she went along. To her diseased mind the story was brand new and she frequently exhausted herself with labor which she regarded as freshly created." Harriet Beecher Stowe died on July 1, 1896, at age eighty-five in Hartford, Connecticut. She is buried in the historic cemetery at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts."@en

Uncle Tom's Cabin was revolutionary in 1852 for its passionate indictment of slavery and for its presentation of Tom, a man of humanity, as the first black hero in American fiction. Labeled racist and condescending by some contemporary critics, it remains a shocking, controversial, and powerful work -- exposing the attitudes of white nineteenth-century society toward the peculiar institution and documenting, in heartrending detail, the tragic breakup of black Kentucky families sold down the river."@en

  • "Published in 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin brought the abolitionists' message to the public conscience - no woman before or since has so moved America to take action against an injustice. Indeed, Abraham Lincoln greeted Stowe in 1863 as "the little lady who made this big war." Eliza Harris, a slave whose child is to be sold, escapes her beloved home on the Shelby plantation in Kentucky and heads North, eluding the hired slave catchers.

  • "Harriet Beecher Stowe & rsquo;s antislavery classic helped sow the seeds of abolition across the nation and became the bestselling novel of the nineteenth century Since its publication in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe & rsquo;s novel has been instrumental in shaping American attitudes about slavery and race. Throughout its long publication history, this remarkable novel has been both beloved and criticized, and its impact on antebellum cultural attitudes cannot be denied. With a diverse and memorable cast of characters, this sentimental novel depicts both the grim realities of slavery and the tremendous strength of character that can triumph over adversity. In Uncle Tom, a noble and pious slave, readers see a man whose dignity, morality, and goodness are never compromised even by the horrors of slavery. Personifying the evils of the institution of slavery is Simon Legree, a ruthless plantation owner. This deeply affecting novel remains a cornerstone of American history. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices."@en
  • "Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War. The sentimental novel depicts the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings. Uncle Tom's Cabin had a deep historical impact as a vital antislavery tool."@en
