"Die Novelle "Die Marquise von O..." erschien 1808. In Kriegswirren wird die Marquise von O... während einer Ohnmacht vergewaltigt. Ist der Mann, der sie rettet, wirklich ihr Erretter oder gar der Vergewaltiger? Selbst als der Retter sich als der Täter offenbart, wehrt sie sich gegen die Zerstörung ihres inneren Bildes vom ritterlichen Menschen. Ihre Eltern begegnen ihr, gebunden an alte Konventionen, verständnislos. So ist die Marquise gezwungen selbstständig zu entscheiden und zu handeln. Kleists Zeitgenossen reagierten auf die Geschichte mit Verständnislosigkeit und Empörung. In Wien wurde das Buch, in dem sich die Geschichte befand, sogar verboten. Gegenüber dem am harmonischen Weltbild der Klassik gereiften Menschen, beschreibt Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) den Menschen als einen, bei dem inneres Bewusstsein und äussere Wirklichkeit aufeinander prallen, dessen Gefühlswelten nicht vom Verstand kontrolliert werden kann. Extreme Grenzsituationen werden ihm zum Verhängnis. Als Individuum ist er an sein Schicksal gebunden. Kleist selbst führt ein ruhelosen, angespanntes und gehetztes Leben, dem er im Alter von 34 Jahren selbst ein Ende setzt."

Bis heute zählte diese Novelle zu den beliebesten Kleists und wird immer noch sehr häufig im Schulunterricht behandelt.
