This journalism master's project includes a professional work component and a research component. The professional work component details the author's experiences as a freelance writer profiling "the childhood of U.S. Attorney General John D. Ascroft. It will cover the period from his birth until the fall of 1960, when he left for Yale on a football scholarship. This profile will explore the major forces during his youth that shaped Ashcroft as well as examine the personality of the young Ashcroft." (p. 4) In the research component the author examines how four U.S. news magazines focused on Ashcroft on three aspects--his religion, character and political positions--during the time when the Bush administration announced his nomination for Attorney General until the present time of this research.This section includes a literature review and articles from the magazines used for the research.
