Elizabeth and her German garden

Elizabeth, a young middle-class English woman catches the eye of Count von Arnim, a land-rich, cash-poor Pussian gentleman considerably older than herself. Her memoir of life on the country estate, trying to recreate an English garden in the unforgiving climate and soil of Northern Germany, is revealing not only in its picture of "Woman put in her place" but also of the rigid society in which she lives.

  • "Indoors are servants, meals and furniture. There, too, is the man of wrath, her upright teutonic husband, inspiring in Elizabeth a mixture of irritation, affection and irreverence. But outside she can escape domestic routine, read favorite books, play with her three babies--and garden to her heart's content. Through Elizabeth's eyes and unique wit, we watch the seasons come and go, each bringing with it new events, friends, and neighbors."
