Uttering, muttering collecting, using and reporting talk for social and educational research

The papers in this collection were initially presented in two successive conferences that dealt with the collection, use, and reporting of spoken language for educational research. The ten papers deal with the method and procedures used in studying talk in a school situation; an analysis of the interaction between the researcher and a group of school boys during an interview; the linguistic aspects of talk as a necessary prerequisite of educational research; the mutual comprehension of social rules involved in talk; an examination of the level of communication in small group discussion; the social context necessary for honest responses in interviews; the psychological aspects of interpreting talk in educational situations; the prerequisites of communicative competence during the first days at school; an analysis of spontaneous talk between mothers and children in the home; and a discussion of the methodology of tape recording conversations, including some of the problems involved in recording.
