Er ist noch nie in diesem Hotel gewesen - oder doch? Die Antwort liegt in einer grausigen Zeitspirale zwischen Wahnsinn und Mord."
  • "In this wondrously pessimistic film Kubrick does not so much subvert the horror genre as displace it with his own cosmic concerns: the primitive he finds at the heart of civilization. The film's strategy is to continually confound expectations set up by the framework of genre - horror merged with fairytale. Family life - the family isolated and invaded from within - is placed at the centre yet virtually caricatured. The film is structured as a journey yet located in one huge set."@en

  • ""All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" or, rather, a homicidal boy in Stanley Kubrick's eerie 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel. With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) informs Jack that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family; Jack thinks it's no problem, but Danny's "shining" hints otherwise. Settling into their routine, Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny's alter ego, "Tony," however, starts warning of "redrum" as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own. Frightened by her husband's behavior and Danny's visit to the forbidding Room 237, Wendy soon discovers what Jack has really been doing in his study all day, and what the hotel has done to Jack."@en

  • "Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. In King's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer, who's settled in for a long winter's hibernation. As many have pointed out, King's protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick's Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him--all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director's fanatical demands for take after take after take.) The Shining is terrifying--but not in the way fans of the novel might expect. When it was redone as a TV miniseries (reportedly because of King's dissatisfaction with the Kubrick film), the famous topiary-animal attack (which was deemed impossible to film in 1980) was there--but the deeper horror was lost. Kubrick's The Shining gets under your skin and chills your bones; it stays with you, inhabits you, haunts you. And there's no place to hide."@en

The film's strategy is to continually confound expectations set up by the framework of genre - horror merged with fairytale. Family life - the family isolated and invaded from within - is placed at the centre yet virtually caricatured. The film is structured as a journey yet located in one huge set. The realistic basis of the images (lighting and decor) is contradicted by the stylization of performance. Hints of psychological explanation are confounded by a switch to the supernatural. Cause and effect become lost in a labyrinth. Paradoxically space is closed off by the tracking steadicam camera. Freudian notions of the uncanny gives way to Jungian archetypes of the unconscious, collective and individual."@en
