  • "From the Publisher: Against the wishes of his widowed mother, young Henry Fleming enlists to fight for the Union in the Civil War. As he first travels from his New York farm to Washington, D.C. and then to a winter campsite in Virginia, he romanticizes battle and anticipates gaining glory. However, when Henry finally sees combat, he is terrified and horrified. He reacts in varying ways to war's intense psychological and physical stress. Largely, he has lost control over his own fate. Will he survive?"@en

  • "Henry Fleming is a young private fighting for the Union Army in the American Civil War. His head filled with visions of heroic glory, Henry is eager for the battlefield, but when faced with his first real chance to fight, Henry begins to doubt his resolve and flees the battlefield. Ashamed, he soon regrets his actions, and longs to regain his honour by earning his "red badge of courage" by being wounded in service. While author Stephen Crane had never participated in a war, and indeed was born after the end of the Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage has been recognized from its first publication for its realistic depiction of life at the front lines. Crane's writing portrays Henry's internal struggle, poignantly offering the harrowing experiences of war from a deeply human point of view. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. Young Henry Fleming dreams of finding glory and honor as a Union soldier in the American Civil War. Yet he also harbors a hidden fear about how he may react when the horror and bloodshed of battle begin. Fighting the enemy without and the terror within, Fleming must prove himself and find his own meaning of valor.Unbelievable as it may seem, Stephen Crane had never been a member of any army nor had taken part in any battle when he wrote The Red Badge of Courage. But upon its publication in 1895, when Crane was only twenty-four, Red Badge was heralded as a new kind of war novel, marked by astonishing insight into the true psychology of men under fire. Along with the seminal short stories included in this volume—“The Open Boat, “The Veteran, and “The Men in the Storm—The Red Badge of Courage unleashed Crane's deeply influential impressionistic style.Richard Fusco has been an Assistant Professor of English at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia since 1997. • "The Red Badge of Courage was published in 1895, when its author, an impoverished writer living a bohemian life in New York, was only twenty-three. It immediately became a bestseller, and Stephen Crane became famous. Crane set out to create "a psychological portrayal of fear." Henry Fleming, a Union Army volunteer in the Civil War, thinks "that perhaps in a battle he might run ... As far as war was concerned he knew nothing of himself." And he does run in his first battle, full of fear and then remorse. He encounters a grotesquely rotting corpse propped against a tree, and a column of wounded men, one of whom is a friend who dies horribly in front of him. Fleming receives his own "red badge" when a fellow soldier hits him in the head with a gun. "The idea of falling like heroes on ceremonial battlefields," Ford Madox Ford remarked later, "was gone forever." • "The finest novel of the Civil War, and one of the greatest battle stories ever toldThe question of courage enters Henry Fleming's mind the moment he dons the blue uniform of the Union Army. But his first firefight reveals the emptiness of words such as bravery and fear. Pinned in by his comrades, he can only fire his rifle like a cog in a machine. There is no chance to run. Then comes the true test. Waking from a nap, Henry sees the enemy advancing once again. Gripped by an unshakable terror, he flees, from his regiment, from duty, from everything he wanted to believe about himself. A corpse bears witness to his shame. The nightmare has come true. Henry Fleming is a coward. Only one thing can save him now: a visible wound, the red badge of courage. With his regiment's colors in hand, Henry looks the enemy in the eye, and charges. Stephen Crane was born six years after Lee's surrender at Appomattox and had yet to see a battlefield when he wrote The Red Badge of Courage. Nevertheless, the novel is widely regarded as one of the most realistic depictions of war ever published, and a masterpiece of American literature. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices."@en

  • "Novel of the American Civil War by Stephen Crane, published in 1895 and considered to be his masterwork for its perceptive depiction of warfare and of the psychological turmoil of the soldier. Crane had had no experience of war when he wrote the novel, which he based partly on a popular anthology, Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. The Red Badge of Courage has been called the first modern war novel because, uniquely for its time, it tells of the experience of war from the point of view of an ordinary soldier. Henry Fleming is eager to demonstrate his patriotism in a glorious battle, but when the slaughter starts, he is overwhelmed with fear and flees the battlefield. Ironically, he receives his "red badge of courage" when he is slightly wounded by being struck on the head by a deserter. He witnesses a friend's gruesome death and becomes enraged at the injustice of war. The courage of common soldiers and the agonies of death cure him of his romantic notions. He returns to his regiment and continues to fight on with true courage and without illusions."@en
