The Amish-Mennonites of Waldeck and Wittgenstein

"Thousands of American Mennonites are descended from the Swiss Amish-Mennonite families who settled in the Waldeck and Wittgenstein areas of Germany. Between 1750 and 1850, the Amish-Mennonite congregations flourished in these areas, but just as quickly disappeared when an irresistable wave of emigration to North America seized the tenant families. There, they not only had the promise of religious freedom, but also could acquire a title to land. Most of these families emigrated to Canada and the United States bewteen 1830 and 1860."--Back cover.
