I robot

In the year 2035, robots are a common, trusted part of life. But that trust is broken when a scientist is found dead, and a skeptical Chicago police detective investigating the murder believes that a robot is responsible. It seems impossible for a robot to break the Three Laws of Robotics, for if that were to happen there would be nothing to stop them from taking over the world. Aiding the detective in his investigation is a psychologist who specializes in the psyches of robots. Will technology ultimately lead to mankind's salvation or annihilation?

  • "It's the year 2035, and robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners. These robots have three laws integrated into their system. One, they cannot harm a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Two, they must do whatever they're told by a human being as long as such orders don't conflict with law one. Three, they have to defend themselves as long as such defense doesn't conflict with laws one or two. The man who wrote the three laws, Dr. Alfred Lanning, apparently jumps out of the tenth-floor window of U.S. Robotics. The Chicago Police Department believe that he committed suicide, but Detective Del Spooner, who hates robots, thinks he was murdered. The number one suspect is a Nestor Class-5 robot, called Sonny. But, if Sonny murdered Lanning, then that means he would have broken the three laws. With the help of Dr. Susan Calvin, a robot psychologist, Spooner must determine the truth before it's too late."

  • "Chicago, 2035. Detective Del Spooner distrusts robots. But why? The Three Laws of Robotics form a perfect circle of logic and protection for humans--all robots are "3 laws safe" from the instant they roll off the assembly line. When U.S. Robotics founder Dr. Alfred Lanning apparently commits suicide, Spooner is assigned to investigate. It appears that Dr. Lanning, the father of robotics, was murdered by a prototype of the latest generation robot, an NS-5 named Sonny. Dr. Susan Calvin, a specialist in robot psychology is assigned to assist Spooner. She cannot believe that a robot could commit a crime, let alone a murder. That would mean the Sonny has violated the Three Laws. If robots can break the laws, there is nothing to stop them from taking over the world, since humans have grown completely dependent upon them. Perhaps ... they already have?"@en
