Sam, honest, blunt, patient, and chivalrous, is powerless to stop Fran's flirtations and infidelities with men younger than herself. By this time Sam has found consolation in a friendship with Edith, an American living in Naples. His peace is shattered when he receives a summons from Fran. Her Kurt's mother has refused to allow her son to marry a divorced woman years older than himself. Sam prepares patiently to shoulder his burden again, when Fran's excessive selfishness suddenly becomes intolerable to him. He leaves her, and hurries back to Edith."
