  • "Offers an overview on the effects of radio frequencies on human tissue. This title emphasises on understanding of biological interactions of cellular mobile communication radiation. • "The popularity and rapid deployment of wireless communication technology has led to increasing numbers of new devices and systems that emit RF electromagnetic energy. It has resulted in large numbers of individuals at the workplace or in the general public being exposed to RF fields. At the current rate of growth more of the world's population will have access to mobile phone services than to electricity. In most cases, the RF sources are in close proximity to the human body. The increased exposures at the workplace or in daily life have prompted the need for further research to evaluate RF safety and health implications. However, exposure to RF electromagnetic fields is not limited to mobile or wireless communication; widespread applications of RF and microwave energy are found in RF article identification and surveillance, on-body sensing and interrogation, novel active and passive security and detection technology, and proposed digital living network applications. Given the technological, regulatory and marketing challenges, the timing of the introduction or deployment of many new applications is somewhat uncertain. It should be noted that the experience of the cellular mobile telephone industry indicates that once new technology is deployed, the adoption rate can easily explode. There is a real need for reliable scientific answers on health effects associated with exposures resulting from widespread use of RF electromagnetic fields in new and existing technology and devices. Advances in Electromagnetic Fields in Living Systems; Volume 5, Health Effects of Cell Phone Radiation presents chapters written by scientists, who have made major contributionsto this area of research. Topics include: Cellular Biology Aspects Carcinogenic Potential Epidemiological Studies Cognitive Effects Hypersensitivity Occupational Exposure Dosimetry and Induced Temperature About the Editor: James C. Lin is professor of electrical engineering at University of Illinois-Chicago, and was Head of the Bioengineering Department. He is a Fellow of AAAS, AIMBE and the IEEE, a recipient of the d'Arsonval Medal from the Bioelectromagnetics Society. Dr. Lin is a member of ICNIRP and served as chair of URSI Commission on Electromagnetics in Biology and Medicine, IEEE Committee on Man and Radiation, and Vice President of National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP)."
  • "The mechanisms of interaction for fields at low frequencies are very different from those at high frequencies. The interaction of electromagnetic fields and waves with biological systems is frequency-dependent. This work is part of the "Advances in Electromagnetic Fields in Living Systems" series."@en
  • "Advances in Electromagnetic Fields in Living Systems, published by Springer since 1994, presents state-of-the-art discussions in electromagnetism that influence the activities of living organisms. This focus affirms Springer's commitment to publish important reviews to add to the scientific and professional literature significant research larger in scope than journal articles. Advances in Electromagnetic Fields in Living Systems , Volume 4 begins with fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG), a noninvasive method of detecting components of the magnetic field produced by the electrical activity of the fetal heart. FMCG is experiencing steady growth, and is expected to gain influence in diagnosing certain congenital fetal heart defects while at the same time providing optimal care for patients. FMCG provides a distinct signal, free of maternal cardiac interference, which can be detected throughout the last half of pregnancy. Other Key Topics: -Noninvasive biomedical application of non-ionizing electromagnetic energy, -Microwave thermoelastic imaging uses microwave-pulse-induced thermoelastic pressure waves to form planar or tomographic images, -Mechanisms of light-tissue interaction in the near infrared region and different types of instruments used for diffuse optical imaging, -Advances in reliable laser diodes and optical telemetry, -ELF magnetic-field exposure and the pain system, -Cyclotron resonance in enhancing the sensitivity of biological systems to magnetic fields. Advances in Electromagnetic Fields in Living Systems will be essential reading for all academics, bench scientists, and industry professionals wishing to take advantage of the latest and greatest in this continuously emerging field. About the Editor: Dr. James C. Lin is Professor of Electrical Engineering, Professor of Bioengineering, and Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Illinois - Chicago. Among other honors, Dr. Lin is a Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of AAAS, a Founding Fellow of AIMBE, and a recipient of the d'Arsonval Medal from the Bioelectromagnetics Society."@en
  • "Early contributions to electromagnetic fields in living systems. Neurological effects of radio frequency electromagnetic fields. Tissue injury from exposure to power frequency electric fields. Therapeutic applications of low frequency electric and magnetic fields. Health aspects of electric and magnetic fields from VDTs."
  • "This research series will focus on the presentation of integrated, known, and confirmed phenomenological observations of electromagnetic fields; their basic mechanisms of interaction; and their applications in biology and medicine. Moreover, it will promote the flow of ideas between practitioners and researchers in biomedicine, engineering, and the physical sciences. The inaugural volume summarizes the history of the field and presents basic, applied, and clinical information ranging from extremely low to super high frequencies."
  • "This is the third volume in the series, in which the topic of the effects of radio frequencies on human tissue, now increasingly a concern with the prevalence of cell phones, is explored by Prof. Lin and other researchers. The impact of electromagnetics on imaging and cardiology, both very keen areas of research at present, is also explored."@en
