"Star du rock and roll, Pink est blasé, las de cette vie factice. Lors d'une tournée à Los Angeles, il s'enferme dans sa chambre d'hôtel, complètement prostré, tout juste capable d'ingurgiter les images que lui offre la télévision. Et pourtant, il s'agit d'un film sur la seconde guerre mondiale, qui va agir sur l'inconscient de Pink. Car son père a été tué à la bataille d'Anzio, et Pink ne l'a jamais véritablement connu puisqu'il n'avait alors que quelques mois. Dès lors, un incroyable voyage va se dérouler dans sa tête, mêlant ses souvenirs d'enfance à ses frustrations et ses fantasmes : Pink se souvient en vrac de ses années scolaires, où les professeurs punissaient systématiquement tout écart par rapport à la norme, de son mariage avec une amie d'enfance, qui ne pouvait que capoter dans l'échec; il imagine aussi la façon dont son père a pu mourir sous les bombes, et revoit inlassablement un grand mur contre lequel il vient cogner de toutes ses forces. Retour à la réalité, dans sa chambre d'hôtel de Los Angeles: une groupie américaine a réussi à s'y introduire et veut se donner à lui. Mais Pink, dans un accès de fureur, détruit tout le mobilier et chasse la fille. Reprennent alors ses fantasmes, qu'il pousse plus loin que jamais: il se voit soudain comme le leader d'un groupe plus fasciste que musicien, devant des foules qu'il manipule, donnant naissance à des excès de violence contre tous les gens " différents". Finalement, à Los Angeles, son manager parvient à enfoncer la porte de la chambre d'hôtel et fait conduire Pink à l'hôpital. Mais le rocker poursuit son " trip ", se réfugie de nouveau derrière son mur et revoit dans sa tête tous les protagonistes de sa vie. Est-ce le bout du rouleau ou parviendra-t-il à abattre définitivement ce mur qui est en lui ?"
