"This book documents and analyzes the experiences of the UN's first Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. It highlights the conceptual advances in the legal understanding of the right to food in international human rights law, as well as analyzes key practical challenges through experiences in 11 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. We live in a world that is richer than ever before, yet one in six people go hungry every day. This paradox was the reason why the UN's most important human rights body, the Commission on Human Rights (now the UN Human Rights Council), appointed an expert to investigate the realization of the human right to food around the world. The Fight for the Right to Food documents the work of the UN's first Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food from 2000 to 2008, giving important insights into the work of a 'Special Rapporteur' and his team. This book advances the understanding of the right to food in theory and in practice, offering essential conceptual and legal developments and an operational understanding of the right to food by documenting experiences in 11 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. It offers insights into the obstacles to the realization of the right to food, sets out key challenges for the future, and pushes forward the frontiers of international human rights law to address the persistence of hunger in the face of globalization."
