Er manipuliert das Funkgerät, um nicht mehr mit den Vorgesetzten reden und sich fragen lassen zu müssen, warum Sergei nicht zurückruft, er lässt das mitgeschriebene Telegramm verschwinden und sabotiert die Wahrheit systematisch. Als die Nachricht dann doch herauskommt, bricht der angestaute Hass heraus, Sergei verfolgt Pavel und will ihm offensichtlich eine Abreibung verpassen. Pavel wehrt sich auf seine Weise, indem er den Fisch, den Sergei so liebt, radioaktiv verseucht und den Riesen davon essen lässt. Am Ende, als das rettende Schiff dann doch kommt, versöhnen sich die beiden wieder miteinander. Und Sergei beschließt, weiterhin auf der Station zu bleiben, die so lange seine Heimat war - was soll er auch woanders?"
