Last year in Marienbad

A French New Wave film that stretches the viewers perceptions of what may be real. A woman, called simply A, is confronted by X, a stranger, who insists that they had met the year before in Marienbad. A has no memory of this, but X explains that they'd had an affair, and that it was her idea to rendezvous at this time and place.

  • "In a vast baroque palace a man (Albertazzi) meets a woman (Seyrig) with whom he may or may not have had an affair the previous year in Marienbad--or was it Frederiksbad? A stylistic film, alternating past present and future, the real and the imaginary, which won considerable international success."
  • "Among an assembly of guests in a vast baroque mansion, the narrator/hero tries to persuade a woman that they have met before, and that she has agreed to go away with him, leaving the man (her husband, perhaps) who has accompanied her to this mansion. Introduces Resnais' unconventional editing techniques. Cryptic symbols and ambiguities abound."
  • ""A handsome stranger tries to convince a lovely young woman that they had a passionate affair a year ago "perhaps at Marienbad", but she claims not to remember him. He haunts her mind with images by mixing memory and fantasy, fear and desire."--Container."
  • "In a baroque spa hotel, an unnamed sophisticate (Albertazzi) attempts to persuade a similarly unnamed married woman (Seyrig) that they have not only previously met, but that they were also romantically involved and had planned to elope together. The woman recalls no such encounter and so begins a sensual and philosophical examination of the uncertainty of truth. The film hypnotically merges chronology to radically blur the boundaries of reality and fantasy, and emerges as one of the most enigmatic movies ever made."
