"Entre les deux premiers volets du Parrain (1972 et 1974), Francis Ford Coppola réalise "Conversation secrète", un film dont il eu l'idée en 1967 et sur lequel plane le fantôme du "Blow up" de Michelangelo Antonioni. Un film intimiste et gris, à l'image de l'imperméable porté par son personnage principal (Gene Hackman). "Conversation secrète" appartient à la veine du thriller paranoïaque qui a émergé dans l'après-coup désenchanté du Watergate. Coppola choisit d'explorer la veine intimiste du genre, à travers la descente aux enfers de cet homme coupable d'avoir commis quelquechose qu'il n'aurait pas dû : écouter. F. Coppola demanda à David Shire, qui était par ailleurs son beau-frère, d'écrire la partition du film, non pas pour un orchestre, comme ce dernier l'espérait secrètement, mais pour un seul instrument, le piano, dont le futur réalisateur d'Apocalypse Now avait pressenti qu'il décrirait à merveille les états d'âme de son personnage : un homme seul, triste et taciturne, rongé par une forme de vide existentiel.
