The Lowered Age of Majority: Its Impact on Higher Education

The impact of lowered age of majority on higher education is discussed in this report. After reviewing the concept of majority and related principles of constitutional law, four areas of possible impact are considered. The first section deals with the determination of financial need for the independent adult student, the second with the question of nonresident tuition, and the third with the impact of a reduced age of majority on required dormitory residence. These three areas involve significant issues in financing higher education. The fourth section reviews a variety of legal contracts between institutions and their students that may also be affected by the lower age of majority. Examples include contracting with adult students, notifying parents when a student is in academic difficulty, and obtaining parental consent for medical treatment. (Author).
