The film begins as Marthe, an elderly peasant woman is brought before the village pastor and condemned to death. As she is burned at the stake Marthe curses the pastor and his progeny. In short order the pastor's young wife Anne falls in love with his son and the pastor has a stroke. As the village becomes aware of Anne's infatuation, the cycle of superstition and accusations of witchcraft begin again. Director Dreyer had not made a film for twelve years prior to directing Day of Wrath. The film was made in Denmark during the darkest days of the Nazi occupation. Dreyer may have intended that the violence of that period should be reflected in this tale of 17th century Denmark."
