Autobiography of Anthony Toomer Porter, son of John Porter and Esther Ann Toomer, born 31 Jan.1828, in Georgetown, South Carolina. He was an Episcopal minister in Charleston, South Carolina before, during and after the Civil War. On 16 Dec. 1852, he married Miss Atikinson. She died 19 June 1891 in South Carolina. They had at least three children. In 1866, he collected funds and opened a school for colored children, which became the Porter Academy. He also influenced the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina to allow the admission of colored parishes.
