Feeling neglected on his birthday Ereth, the old porcupine, sets out looking for his favorite treat and instead finds imself acting as mother to three young fox kits.
"Ereth, das alte Stachelschwein, trägt nicht nur äusserlich Stacheln. Auch sein Wesen ist durch und durch "stachelig". Er ist ein Einzelgänger, ein alter, brummiger Kauz. Und ausgerechnet ihm muss es passieren, dass er den Hilferuf einer Füchsin hört, die in einer Falle steckt. Und ausgerechnet er verspricht ihr, sich um ihre Jungen zu kümmern, die noch nicht selbständig genug sind, um allein durchs Leben zu kommen. Nach dem Tod der Fuchsmutter macht sich Ereth brummig auf den Weg Richtung Fuchsbau und findet dort auch richtig drei junge Füchse vor. Sie sind schon recht gross und dazu frech, vorlaut und flegelhaft. Alles Eigenschaften, die das Stachelschwein absolut nicht ausstehen kann - bei anderen! Immer wieder kommt Ereth in Versuchung, den ganzen Bettel hinzuschmeissen und sich in seine Höhle zurückzuziehen. Und immer wieder macht ihm sein weiches Herz einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Wenn sich nachts die jungen Füchse an seinen Bauch kuscheln, weiss er, dass er, trotz der Teenagerallüren der Jungtiere, gebraucht wird. Nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten prägen Respekt und Verständnis füreinander sowie gegenseitige Hilfsbereitschaft das Verhältnis. Der Autor überzeugt einmal mehr durch die Beschreibung der verschiedenen Charaktere. Nicht nur das griesgrämige Stacheltier, auch die pubertierenden Füchse sind umwerfend gut beschrieben.
