Fishing for coherence : fisheries and development policies

For millions of people in developing countries, fisheries represent a means of livelihood, a source of food and nutrition, and a source of wealth for economic growth. Fish often constitutes the sole source of protein for many people, especially the poor. Yet the risks to sustainable fisheries are high. Three quarters of global marine fisheries are overexploited or fully exploited, and the pressure on fish stocks is increasing. Demand for fish in the developed countries, which currently absorb 80% of traded fish, is increasing while the demand for fish in developing countries is likely to augme.
