It can also be seen as an aberrant version of the American success story, although little is seen of society at large. The concentration is on Camonte's terrible innocence in the world of the gangster, a sense of enclosure heightened by the expressionistic visual style. Hawks and Hecht, as the principal authors, based the original screenplay on the idea of a tragicomedy portraying the Capone/Camonte family as if they were the Borgias set down in Chicago, including the incestuous brother-sister relationship. Although weakened by censorship, these aspects of the screenplay were still sufficiently present to resist the censor's attempt to impose, in several irrelevant scenes, the conventional theme of indictment: society threatened by gangsters."@en

This film was loosely based on the original directed by Howard Hawks. Al Pacino is Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who enters the United States as part of the Mariel boat lift. Montana rises through the ranks of his competitors in Miami's criminal underworld as cocaine floods into Florida in the early 1980's. Pacino plays an over the top, out of control, gun loving thug, a role that is the polar opposite of his buttoned down mob boss in The Godfather. The film is dedicated to Howard Hawks and Ben Hecht, who were the writers of the 1932 original. The critical response to Scarface was positive even though the film received criticism for its violence and graphic language."@en
