"Der Anspruch Seit dem Standardwerk von Remplein (1965) "Die seelische Entwicklung des Menschen im Kindes-und Jugendalter" gibt es im deutschen Sprachraum keinen Versuch mehr, das Wissen urn die Jugendphase systematisch auf den neuesten Stand der Forschung zu bringen und fur alle jene, die in der Beschaftigung mit Kindem und Jugendlichen einen Lebensmitte1punkt haben, fruchtbar zu machen. Wie die nebenan abgebildeten Buchtitel dokumentieren, habe ich mich tiber mehr als zwanzig Jahr wissenschaftlich mit der Jugendphase beschaftigt. Hinter diesen Btichem stand ein Projekt, in dem wir ca. 2000 Lebenslaufe von der 6. Jahrgangsklasse bis zur 10. Schulstufe beobachten konnten. Diese Forschungsar beit hat mich zudem in Kontakt mit vielen Kollegen auf nationalen und intema tionalen Kongressen gebracht und mir so die einmalige Lebenschance geboten, den derzeitigen intemationalen Standard der Forschung zur Adoleszenz kennen zu lemen. Diese lange Forschungskonzentration hat mich ermutigt, einen "zwei ten Remplein" zu versuchen - wenngleich mit ganz anderen theoretischen und empirischen Grundlagen. Geblieben ist das Anliegen: dem Leser ein umfassendes Verstandnis der Entwicklungsprozesse in einer kritischen Lebensphase zu geben. Es wurde zudem von der Beobachtung gestarkt, daB in der Padagogik und in der Jugendforschung die Perspektive der "Entwicklung" verloren gegangen ist. Zu sehen, daB der menschliche Lebenslauf keine zufaIlige Abfolge von Handlungs und Erlebnisschwerpunkten ist, sondem eine sowohl intern als auch extern mitbe stimmte Systematik erkennbar wird, erschien mir so wichtig, daB sich ein darauf ausgerichtetes Lehrbuch lohnen sollte."

Diese Perspektiven sind verbunden mit drei wissenschaftliche Richtungen, die das Bild der Adoleszenz geprägt haben: die klassische deutschsprachige Tradition, die am Entwicklungsgedanken orientiert war, die französische Tradition der Sozialgeschichte, die die kontextuelle Sichtweise des Aufwachsens betonte und die englischsprachige Tradition der empirischen Forschung zum zweiten Lebensjahrzehnt.
