  • "Les trois premiers voyages de l'évêque de Rome à Constantinople datent du VIe siècle : le pape Jean Ier s'y rend en 526, le pape Agapet en 536, le pape Vigile en 547. Les deux premiers font le voyage sous la pression du pouvoir temporel, envoyés en mission par les rois ariens du Royaume des Goths d'Italie, Théodoric puis Théodat, tous deux inquiets des avancées politico-religieuses des empereurs orthodoxes Justin puis Justinien vers l'Occident. Le troisième, Vigile, est enlevé sur l'ordre de l'empereur Justinien qui entend se servir de lui pour mettre fin aux divisions entre les Eglises en Orient, divisions nées du Conciles de Chalcédoine de 451. Bien que les circonstances de ces déplacements des évêques de Rome et de leurs missions soient chaque fois différentes, la question de la communion ecclésiale se profile, importante, à l'arrière-plan de chacun des voyages. A l'occasion de chaque mission fixée par les pouvoirs politiques, se manifeste et se précise la mission propre du pape, qui y trouve une occasion inattendue de travailler à l'affermissement des Eglises et à leur unité, sur le fondement d'une même foi, récemment redéfinie à Chalcédoine. Les trois papes assument leur mission chacun à sa manière, Vigile ayant le redoutable privilège de la vivre dans le contexte difficile du Concile de Constantinople de 553. La perception de la communion des Eglises s'approfondit et se prolonge en une réflexion ecclésiologique dans laquelle s'inscrivent le propos sur le rôle de l'évêque de Rome dans l'Eglise, mais aussi la question des sacrements, celles des diptyques, celle de l'eucharistie célébrée au coeur de la Nouvelle Rome, eucharistie considérée sous l'aspect de la participation de l'évêque de Rome dans la célébration. Ces quelques éléments ecclésiologiques ouvrent sur une certaine approche de l'unité des Eglises et de son fonctionnement."
  • "The first three journeys of a bishop of Rome to Constantinople date back to the sixth century. Pope John I went there in 526, pope Agapetus in 536 and pope Vigilius in 547. For the first two journeys, the popes were sent under pressure of the civil authorities by the arian kings of the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy, Theodoric and Theobat, worried about the political and religious agenda towars the West of the orthodox emperors Justin and Justinian. For the third journey, Vigilius was captured on the order of the emperor Justinian, who wished to use him to solve the religious divisions which took place in the Oriental churches after the Council of Chalcedon in 451. The circumstances of each of these journeys was different, and so was also their mission, yet the idea of ecclesial communion was present, as an important issue, in each of these journeys. Although the missions were set up by the political powers, the popes kept their own agenda, in order to work towards the strenghtening and the unity of the Churches around the common faith recently defined by the Council of Chalcedon. Each of the three popes worked towards that mission, in different manner. Pope Vigilius had the terrible privilege to live through the difficult times of the Council of Constantinople in 553. Perceiving the importance of the idea of ecclesial communion led us to an ecclesiological reflexion on the role of the bishop of Rome in the Church and to study the sacraments, the diptychs, and especially the participation of the bishop of Rome to the celebration of the liturgy in Constantinople. These ecclesiological elements open to a vision of the workins of the Churches' unity."
