Walden diaries, notes and sketches

Since 1950, Mekas has been keeping a film diary. To keep a film (camera) diary, is to react (with the camera) immediately, now, this instant: either you get it now, or you don't get it at all. To get it now, as it happens, demands the total mastery of one's tools (in this case, a Bolex camera). All the structuring (editing) is done right there, during the shooting, in the camera. Walden contains materials from the years 1965-69, strung together in chronological order.

  • ""Poet and hero of the American counter-culture, Jonas Mekas, born in Lithuania in 1922, invented the diary form of film-making. Walden, his first completed diary film, an epic portrait of the New York avant-garde art scene of the 60s, is also a groundbreaking work of personal cinema"--Slipcase."@en
  • "A visual diary of filmmaker Jonas Mekas' life in New York City in the late 1960's. We are shown vignettes of weddings, anti-war protests, dinner parties, as well as the first performance of the Velvet Underground. We see Mekas as he attends a party with Edie Sedgwick and Nico, and as he visits Montreal to film John Lennon and Yoko Ono during their bed in. The film is a record of Mekas' friends and family and the New York arts scene as Mekas experienced it. These personal and public moments, shot on film, are often recorded at less than 24 frames per second, creating a staccato, kinetic energy throughout the film. Although these scenes are all documents of events that actually took place, they are transformed into a meditation on time itself as it rushes past Mekas' camera in single frame flashes and sped up diaristic scenes. "Now dear viewer as you sit and as you watch and as the life outside in the streets is still rushing, maybe a little bit slower.....Just watch these images, nothing much happens, no tragedy, no drama, no suspense, just images for myself and for a few others. Life will continue, but there won't be small peaceful cities on the shores of the ocean and maybe not even trees or flowers, at least not in such abundance. This is Walden what you see. This is Walden." Jonas Mekas"@en
