Trotz der umfangreichen Berichterstattung über Armut in Deutschland gibt es bisher kaum Informationen über armutsnahe Lebensverhältnisse, also über Risikolagen zwischen bekämpfter Armut und relativem Wohlstand. Etwas mehr Licht in diesen Graubereich der Forschungslandschaft bringt nun die vom Bundesfamilienministerium finanzierte Untersuchung "Familien in prekären Lebenslagen" des Deutschen Jugendinstituts. Die Ergebnisse zeigen zwei armutsnahe, prekäre Lebenslagen, deutlich unterschieden von den Sozialhilfe-Empfängern und auch untereinander klar abgrenzbar. Die Lebensumstände dieser beiden unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen, ihre Humankompetenzen und ihre soziale Einbindung werden ebenso beschrieben wie ihre individuellen Handlungsstrategien und ihre Bewertung der eigenen Lebenslage. Diese Informationen ermöglichen Rückschlüsse auf die Ursachen der prekären Familiensituation und die Entwicklung von Hilfsmöglichkeiten, um die Betroffenen vor dem Abgleiten in die Armut zu bewahren."
