http://schema.org/description

  • "This book presents five controversial issues concerning moral decisions in our time: bioethics, euthanasia, decisions near death, genetic engineering and substance abuse. These topics are examined from interdisciplinary perspectives, reflecting the expertise of physicians, mental health professionals, and theologians who presented their views at the Sixth National Conference of the Orthodox Christian Association of Medicine, Psychology and Religion. Their presentations show how religious beliefs come to bear on clinical situations and interventions; how theoria, theory, informs praxis, practice. This presentation does not offer dogmatic treatment of contemporary problems but identifies, on the one hand, some of the difficulties of applying traditional values to modern medical situations while, on the other hand, articulating and developing how traditional perspectives provide the needed rudder in addressing modern ethical problems. These papers reflect an interdisciplinary approach which express sensitivity and appreciation of multiple perspectives of human problems. The discussions in this volume are in dialogue with one another, presenting a laboratory of inquiry about how the sacred affects modern technology and clinical services."
