"Tomo 1: Prendendo spunto dalle prestigiose Gifford Lectures, tenute nel 1989 con il titolo "La dimora del Divino nel mondo contemporaneo. La Trinità indivisa", "Il ritmo dell'Essere", alla cui stesura Panikkar si è dedicato per vent'anni, è considerata la sua opera più importante nel campo filosofico. Il tema di base è la struttura triadica o trinitaria della realtà, che comprende il Divino, l'Umano e il Cosmico. Questa prospettiva cosmoteandrica rappresenta un punto di unione fra cristianesimo, induismo e buddhismo. Nel descrivere la sua opera, Panikkar afferma: "Non sto cercando di dire qualcosa di nuovo. Non voglio contribuire alla alienazione prodotta dalla ricerca ossessiva di novità. La mia originalità, ammesso che esista, sarà quella di andare alle origini - non per fare archeologia o formulare interpretazioni anacronistiche [...], ma per propormi come cacciatore-raccoglitore dei nostri giorni, piluccando frammenti di vita dallo stupendo campo dell'esperienza umana sulla Terra". Alla fine, tuttavia, egli ammise i limiti nel raggiungere una tale grandiosa sintesi. Il capitolo nono, che riguardava la consumazione escatologica finale di tutta la realtà, fu omesso dall'autore e sostituito da un breve epilogo commovente in cui egli scrive: "Ho dovuto ammettere che le questioni ultime non possono avere risposte ultime, ma, se non altro, possiamo essere consapevoli del problema che abbiamo presentato. Ho raggiunto i limiti della mia comprensione, e qui mi devo fermare."
