Physical Education Instructional Techniques: An IndividualizedHumanistic Approach

The method of teaching physical education described in this book integrates current knowledge of how and why people learn into an individualzied instruction model. It is hoped that this humanistic approach to teaching physical education will overcome the problems of group instruction and stimulate greater possibilities of accomplishment. The practical methods suggested have been field-tested in a variety of settings. The process presented in the text can be easily applied to perceptual motor learning, motor and sports education, and all other aspects of physical education. The individualized method considers the variety of characteristics of each student and selects what is needed to make each student learn productively. Case studies dealing with the application of theory bridge the gap between theory and practice and clarify the techniques described. The authors show how common lessons in group instruction fail to stimulate the diverse needs of students who will readily respond to the individualized approach. The format of the book also uses the components of the individualized approach. Each chapter is introduced with an instructional unit for the reader including diagnosis, "can you" questions, suggested prescriptions, a learning program, proposed learning objectives, practice, and evaluation. Among its other features, the book explores in depth the major components of education (the student, the teacher, and the process of learning); focuses on planning, use of media, practice, and evaluation procedures; concludes with material on decision-making, guiding, learning, appraisal, motivation, and change; includes samples of individualized learning programs and a glossary of terms; and integrates motor learning principles in a practical way.
