Instructional Media: A Procedure for the Design of Multi-MediaInstruction, a Critical Review of Research, and Suggestions forFuture Research

A procedure was developed whereby educational specialists could prepare the specifications for media in which various sequences of instruction would be programed and developed. Procedures were developed and tried for a set of behavioral objectives for an experimental curriculum in science instruction. It was possible to illustrate and implement the steps outlined for sample objectives representing various kinds of learning. An implication of the study was that media research needs to be conducted for single experimental objectives representing various kinds of learning. (Jc).

  • "Based on the theses that all media have usefulness, that effectiveness is greatest when media selection is grounded on a systematic analysis of instructional objectives, and that educational specialists have a rightful function in the selection, packaging, and utilization of instructional sequences in all media, an analytical procedure was developed which constitutes a basis for matching media with educational objectives. Using this procedure, educational personnel who are responsible for the conduct of instruction would also be responsible for choosing the medium in which it would be programed. The choice would normally occur at the time of the original design of the curriculum. The analysis involves the use of the most dependable and generalizable knowledge available concerning the conditions of instruction required for each type of learning. In applying the procedure, the behavioral objectives for the course or unit are stated. The type of learning involved for each objective is identified. A media program is developed which lists instructional events, identifies characteristics of required stimuli, and states acceptable media options. The media options are then scanned for frequently occuring media. The medium in which the instruction should be packaged is assigned. And finally, specifications for the materials are written.
