Asphalt jungle (Motion picture)

A criminal gang plans an elaborate jewel robbery. What is distinctive in the telling is the straightforward way Huston humanises the criminals while showing their professional approach to crime as 'a left-handed form of human endeavour'. In place of psychosis are all-to-human weaknesses so that the failure of endeavour is not so much fated as fortuitous. The sense of irony and alienation - the police are portrayed as the agents of a hostile world - is, however, wholly noir.

[(c) Médiafilm] [SDM] Avec Sterling Hayden, Louis Calhern, James Whitmore, Jean Hagen."

To pull it off, he recruits safecracker Louis, driver Gus, financial backer Emmerich, and strong-arm man Dix Handley. At first the plan goes like clockwork, but little accidents accumulate and each partner proves to have his own fatal weakness. In the background is a pervasive, grimy urban malaise."--IMDB."

  • "This story of a million-dollar jewel heist in a bleak and nameless midwestern city focuses on the criminals themselves, their loyalties, their failings, and the details of their profession. The mastermind of the caper is Doc Riedenschneider and his team of specialists is composed of Louis Ciavelli, the safecracker, Gus Minissi, the driver, and Dix Handley, the "hooligan." When Riedenschneider is released from prison, he approaches lawyer Alonzo Emmerich with a plan for the biggest jewel heist in history. Emmerich not only gives Doc the needed money but also offers to fence the jewels. Doc carefully rehearses the seemingly fail-safe plan with his team, but Emmerich has a shady, double-crossing plan of his own."
