  • "Hitchcock once remarked "Everything is perverted in a different way, isn't it?" In The Birds he adds another complex heroine to a list of conflicted and fascinating female protagonists that appear in his later films, Vertigo, Psycho, Marnie, etc. In The Birds, nature is neither benign or innocent, but rather exists in direct opposition to American middle class life. From the moment a seagull gashes Melanie Daniel's forehead as she motors across Bodega Bay, The Birds shifts from romance to terror. Following the death of a local school teacher, attacked by birds, Mitch Brenner boards up his house and prepares to fight the attacking flocks. Like Leiningen Versus The Ants, the members of the Brenner household fight off the forces of nature, as they stream down the chimney and gnaw their way into the attic. Filmed on location in Bodega Bay, California, thousands of birds and nearly 400 trick shots lend this film a believable air of terror. Yet The Birds is more than just a horror film, it is also the director's commentary on American middle class self satisfaction and emptiness. This is evident in the film's opening sequences where Melanie and Mitch casually flirt in the pet store, she is the daughter of a millionaire, he is a well to do lawyer; outside the pet shop's window the birds are congregating, waiting for some signal only they can comprehend. "In these opening scenes, Melanie's behaviour and attitude, even her stance are unnatural and dehumanizing, life rendered insignificant in the gilded cage of artificiality." Robin Wood"@en
