"Dieser Film erzählt intelligent die Geschichte eines unbekümmerten Arztes (Liam Neeson als schnuckliger Teddybär) und seiner Entdeckung Nells (diese Rolle brachte Foster eine Oscarnominierung), einer Frau, die in den Wäldern erzogen wurde und keine menschlichen Kontakte außer zu ihrer sprachbehinderten Mutter hatte. Der Film deckt die Art von Geschichte ab, in der ein Mensch aus seiner gewohnten Umgebung in eine ungewohnte Umgebung gebracht wird, indem Nells Seele geöffnet (durch die Entschlüsselung ihrer unverständlichen Sprache) und sie daraufhin in die moderne Welt gebracht wird. Was Nell so außergewöhnlich macht, ist die seriöse Arbeit von Neeson, Natasha Richardson (als einer nervösen Psychologin), und einer kleinen, aber feinen Ansammlung von Nebendarstellern (Nick Searcy als Sheriff ist wunderbar). Im Mittelpunkt steht eine weitere außergewöhnliche Leistung von Jodie Foster, die den Film ebenfalls produzierte. Regisseur Michael Apted (Halbblut) bringt seine normale Ration an Realismus in den Film ein, der mit Hilfe einer guten Kameraarbeit (von Dante Spinotti) in den Bergen von North Carolina in Szene gesetzt wurde. Durch lyrische Sprache und Gebärden lässt Foster den Zuschauer in dem Glauben, sie sei im Körper einer anderen Frau, zu vergleichen mit Jeff Bridges in Starman. Eine wunderbare Darstellung, die dem Film zusätzlich Ausdruck verleiht.
