"Sechs Jahre war Günther alt, als seine Angehörigen ihn nach Bethel brachten. Damals konnte er bei voll ausgebildeter Intelligenz noch kein einziges Wort sprechen. Weil ihm Sonne und Kalzium gefehlt hatten, war er vom Kopf bis zu den Füßen eine Missgestalt. "Ein Nichts bist Du, nichts weiter als ein Nichts", hatte die Großmutter zu ihm gesagt. Die Leute von Bethel waren anderer Meinung: Für sie war er Günther, ein ernstzunehmender Mensch, der auf andere angewiesen ist, ein hilfsbedürftiger Junge, dessen Geist Flügel bekommen hatte, ein Nimmersatt im Unterricht, ein Freund, ein Christ. Als das Wort Euthanasie in Bethel geflüstert wurde und die Ärztekommission schon in der Tür stand, hatte Günther das Schlimmste überstanden: Er wusste wieder, dass nicht gesunde Knochen oder gesunder Verstand über den Wert eines Lebens entscheiden, sondern allein der, der es geschaffen hat. So kämpfte er an der Seite Bodelschwinghs für das bedrängte Tal der Liebe. Es sollte kein Tal des Todes werden."

Reden kann er auch nicht. Ein verkrüppelter Idiot! Wer selbst nicht arbeiten kann, ist nach ihrer Logik auch nichts "wert". Sie bringt ihn in das diakonische Werk Bethel. Was er dort erlebt, übertrifft seine Ahnung: Man redet mit ihm! Man traut ihm etwas zu! Er lernt sprechen, schreiben, laufen! Man liebt ihn! Doch Bethel ist bedroht: Vom Krieg und von einer Ideologie, nach der es lebensunwertes Leben gibt. Grandios ist der Dialog, in dem Günther und sein Freund dieses Thema diskutieren - und zum Schweigen bringen!"
