"Im Januar 395 verstarb Kaiser Theodosius I. in Mailand. Sein Sohn Honorius war mit zehn Jahren noch zu jung, um die Regierung zu übernehmen. Dies tat an seiner Stelle ein Heermeister vandalischer Herkunft, der wenige Jahre zuvor in die kaiserliche Familie eingeheiratet hatte: Stilicho! Die Regentschaft Stilichos (395-408 n. Chr.) markiert einen Wendepunkt in der Geschichte des spätrömischen Reiches. Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich eingehend mit Fragen zur Chronologie der politischen Ereignisse für den behandelten Zeitraum auseinander. Einen weiteren Themenschwerpunkt bildet die umfassende Darstellung von Stilichos Reformgesetzgebung. Die Barbareninvasionen seit Ende 401 und die Verwicklung des Westens in die Johannes Chrysostomus-Affäre brachten Stilichos ehrgeizige Reformpolitik vorzeitig zum Scheitern. Sein Sturz und seine Ermordung im Sommer 408 leiteten den endgültigen Niedergang des Westreiches ein."
