Soul of Justice : Thelton Henderson's American journey

Few judges provoke the ire of conservatives more than Thelton Henderson, senior judge of the Federal District Court of Northern California. This program profiles Thelton Henderson's life and career, exploring what his decisions on affirmative action, environmental protection, and prison reform--and the furors that surrounded these decisions--mean for American society. Henderson's rulings, often protecting the constitutional rights of the marginalized, demand close scrutiny of the complex interplay between the law, political power, and social justice. (60 minutes) A streaming videorecording.

  • "This production tells the story of Judge Thelton Henderson's career, from serving as the first African American lawyer in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Dept. of Justice, observing civil rights activities, to his role as Senior Judge of the Federal District Court of Northern California. He served as a lawyer for one of the first U.S. legal aid offices in East Palo Alto, using Stanford law students. As a recruiter for the Stanford Law School, he succeeded in improving the percentage of minority students attending there. Cases highlighted in this program include his decision to issue an injunction to block Proposition 209 which bans affirmative action in California (later reversed by a three judge panel), his work to improve California prisons, and his rulings upholding strict standards for dolphin-safe tuna fishing."
  • "The story of conflict and contradiction faced by Thelton Henderson, the second African American judge appointed to the Federal District Court of Northern California."
  • ""Few judges provoke the ire of conservatives more than Thelton Henderson, Senior Judge of the Federal District Court of Northern California. His career in many ways parallels the larger historic arc of the Civil Rights movement and the changing vision of government -- from Jim Crow laws to Civil Rights victories and back again with recent attacks on affirmative action. Similarly reflected are the changes and conflicts in judicial philosophy during those 40 years. Henderson's decisions on affirmative action, environmental protection and prison reform --and the furors that surrounded them --serve as a prism on these changes and what they mean for American society"--California Newsreel website."@en
