Are we amused? : humour about women in the biblical worlds

Biblical humour remains elusive for many readers. Biblical humour about women and gender remains more problematic still, for its recognition may imply the realization that it is a cruel and disrespectful humour, ridicule rather than good-natured fun. But, whatever its intent, humour about women is also humour about men. In other words, it is humour about gender roles. The critique of women, womanhood and femaleness implied by the humour in biblical and related texts serves, in equal measure, as a critique of men, manhood and maleness -- in the texts, of the texts' authors, and of the texts' commentators and readers.
