Man and mask : Oskar Schlemmer and the "Bauhaus" stage
Oscar Schlemmer was concerned with portraying the world through images not imitations. He aimed at abstraction, by revealing all that is inherent in shapes, forms and numbers. The stage characters are therefore disguised through costume and masks.
"The activities at the Bauhaus of Oskar Schlemmer were not confined to painting and teaching sculpture, but also to ballet. Schlemmer aimed at abstraction, by stripping his dancers of their individual identities with the use of masks and costumes. He was particularly concerned with the relation between man and space."

"Depicts Schlemmer's ideas of the Bauhaus, translated into ballet form. His central theme shows the relation between man and space, with the dancer stripped of his identity by use of costumes and masks. The film presents an historically faithful, precise reconstruction of some of his dances and gives a sense of what Bauhaus teaching was really like."@en

"Oskar Schlemmer was concerned with the relation between Man and Space, and put his ideas into effect when he taught at the Bauhaus from about 1922. He aimed at abstraction and freed the stage of the trappings of tradition by hiding the individual dancer behind costumes and masks. Includes historically faithful reconstruction of several of Schlemmer's ballets."@en
"The activities at the "Bauhaus" of Oscar Schlemmer, who was born in Stuttgart in 1888 and died in 1943, were not confined to painting and teaching sculpture; he also sought to put his ideas on ballet into practice. These were first revealed to the general public in 1922 on the occasion of the premiere of his "Triadic Ballet". The central theme of his work was the relation between man and space."
