As was often the case with the low budget noir thriller the representatives of the law and decency are rendered colourless, almost anonymous, with the centre of attention shifting to aberrant behaviour, in this case John Ireland's portrayal of a gunman. The Freudian associations of sex and violence, evident in the gunman's ritualised perfuming of the bullet and massaging of the gunbarrel before each killing assumes plausible menace in the context of Mann's mise-en-scene and Ireland's playing.
